In other news, back in Toronto. This is gonna be a weird experience going from a town of 280 to 2.7 million people.

So Friday’s confirmed? I’ll mark it off my calendar.

I just need to book a reservation.

I saw a 380 backing up at SFO and they had a truck with a light bar behind it acting as a spotter, it’s so damn tall it doesn’t seem right.

“Why the f*ck did we buy this behemoth? Dammit. ”

Meanwhile sales of the
new 737 max seem to be stalling....

Boeing has at various points considered putting V-tails on large jets in part to make the vertical clearances less ridiculous. This is a model of a passenger C-17 they were considering:
Still even with no tail, the A380 would be a very big boy.

“here at the wild air port a mother A380 stands over its new born before showing its way of the sky."

Ouch...
But to say I’m suddenly just a little
reluctant to fly Southwest is an understatement.

That
MD-12 should have been a thing...

I got no response from my friend who flies for SWA. He is usually swift to respond to my inquiries.

I mean, it presumably would have flopped as badly as the A380 and 747-8, so probably it should not have been a thing, but in theory I like the idea of more giant airliners.

I have a neighbor who is a SWA captain, I was meaning to get his opinion on all this (but he’s in Chicago 4 days a week and I rarely see him).
My old man is an air disaster expert, I need to see what he thinks. The guy is about 90% accurate in guessing what went wrong in most accidents. I guess 55+
years in the industry will do that.

On Moving:
I’ve lived in big metro areas with a pop. > 5 million , in the country where the nearest town had a pop. < 4,000 , and in just about everything in between . Going from a small town to a big city is relatively easy. It was a hell of a lot harder taking my wife and kids from a giant metro area to a town of less than 10,000. I was fine. My wife cried.

I think this is a firm case of Boeing put new shit in the OS and didn’t bother to tell anyone or train them properly.

I think there’s also a wee bit of “tech creep” in that we have a whole generation of airline pilots who don’t even think about stick & rudder dynamics. The autopilots and nav systems do so much now, I can’t imagine the crews are as able to adapt as they were 30-50 years ago.
(to be fair, on a net basis fatalities are way down, including avoidable issues that computers have helped with)

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Have flown on two , can confirm.
When you get to your gate, and see that beast sitting there through the windows, and how tiny the outside hatch appears, it is a little awesome.
Taxing away from the gate, you look out the window at the other parked 380s , admire the immensity of the multiple sets of landing gear, and think how incredible it is is that something that big can actually fly. Then you realize you are on one yourself, and about to do exactly that!

Thanks! The 401 was like Mad Max and makes me thankful I live where I live now.

It’s also obsolete. In a big way.
